Koo Jeong A

Born in Seoul Korea. Lives and works everywhere.

The work of Koo Jeong A incorporates derivative objects with the transformative capacity of still and moving images, sound and scent. These mediums are often combined with terrestrial/ extraterrestrial agents such as wind and gravity on site-specific reconfigurations and interventions into architectural space in order to conjure alternative realities. By re-casting materials such as magnets, crystal diamonds and unwrapped gums into unexpected formations and continuously creating autotrophic universes into transient, cosmic constellations, where order and disorder, perception and practicality are always oscillating.

Koo worked as an artist-in-residence in the Augarten Contemporary, part of the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere in Vienna (2002), Dia foundation in New York City (2010), Art Pace in San Antonio(2003), CCA in Kitakyushu (2002,2011), IASPIS in Stockhom (2000), Agnes b’s residency (1998-2005) in Paris and the Villa Medici in Rome (2000).

Koo Jeong A had a solo exhibition at the Wiener Secession, titled 3355 (2002), Dia at the Hispanic Society, Dia: Beacon, The Dan Flavin Art Institute in Bridgehampton for the exhibition of Constellation Congress (2010). In 2007, Koo produced a series of installations under the title Oussseux for the Centre International d’Art et du Paysage in Ile de Vassivière, and built the glow in the dark skate park named OTRO (2012), that followed the EVERTRO (2015) in Liverpool, UK and ARROGATION(2016) in Sao Paulo, Brazil. As well at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (1994 and 1997), Moderna Museet in Stockholm (1998), Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris (2004), Kunsthalle in Dusseldorf (2012), Art Sonje in Seoul (2017), Prerequisites 7 (AR project) at the Foundation Beyeler in Basel (2019), Julia Stoschek Collection and among other venues.

The artist has shown regularly in group exhibitions since 1994, including the Venice Biennale (1995, 2001, and 2003), Gwangju Biennale (1997), International Triennale of Contemporary Art in Yokohama (2001), Biennale of Sydney (2004), Performa 05, Il tempo del postino, the opera project in Manchester International Festival (2007) and Setouchi Triennale, Japan (2019). In 2002, Koo was a finalist for the Guggenheim Museum’s Hugo Boss Prize, the winner of the Villa Medici Award in 2000 and the Hermes Korea Prize for contemporary Art in 2005.
