Pedro Cabrita Reis
Born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1956, where he lives and works.
With a career spanning over four decades, Pedro Cabrita Reis’ work is known for an idiosyncratic philosophical and poetical take addressing a wide range of media. His practice has received constant international recognition, establishing Cabrita Reis as a crucial referent to understand sculpture from the mid 1980’s.
His work comprises sculpture, photography, drawing and installations made with industrial materials, found objects and manufactured objects. By using simple materials that are submitted to constructive processes, Cabrita Reis recycles almost anonymous reminiscences of primordial gestures and actions repeated in everyday life. The complex theoretical and formal diversity of Cabrita Reis’ work stems from an anthropological stance, opposed to the reductionism of sociological discourse.
Cabrita Reis has participated in important international exhibitions, such the Venice Biennale de Venecia in 2022, 2013 and 2003, year in which he represented Portugal; the Biennale de Lyon in 2009; Documenta IX and XIV in Kassel in 1992 y 2017; and the Biennial of São Paulo in 1994 and 1998. In 2022 he presented the work “The Three Graces” in the Jardins des Tuileries, commissioned by the Musée du Louvre. In 2024, he presented the anthology “Atelier”, with work spanning over 3,000 sq.m. in the Mitra Pavilions.
Pedro Cabrita Reis’ work is present in the collections of international museums such as the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid; MoMA PS1, New York; Tate Modern, London; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Museo Tamayo Arte Contemporáneo, Mexico City; Hamburger Kunsthalle, Hamburg; Serralves Foundation, Porto; Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona, Barcelona; Museo JUMEX, Mexico City; IVAM, Valencia, Spain, among many others.
