“This person doesn’t exist” is a special project by Carlos Amorales that stems from an increasingly present question: what makes a face appear real to us?

The project takes its title from a digital platform that uses artificial intelligence to generate images of people who have never existed. Each time the page is refreshed, a new face appears: it seems to belong to someone, but behind that image there is no identity, no story, nor a real person.

In response to this automated process, Amorales responds through drawing. Without specific models, he creates faces from his imagination, constructed through lines, shapes, and colors that synthesize human features and expressions. Although they do not represent real individuals, each one seems to have an identity of its own and inevitably triggers the impulse to recognize someone in it.

“This person doesn’t exist” thus establishes a dialogue between two ways of creating faces. On the one hand, artificial intelligence, capable of producing infinite variations from existing images; on the other, drawing, where Amorales turns to intuition, imagination, and the manual gesture to invent people who do not exist either.

The project continues a logic that has been present in Amorales’ practice for years.

As in his “Archivo líquido”, each image can function individually while, at the same time, forming part of a broader visual language.

In “This person doesn’t exist”, the repetition and variation of the faces opens up a reflection on identity and on the way we recognize the human at a moment when technology can produce images that are increasingly difficult to distinguish from reality.
