Galería Albarrán-Bourdais is pleased to present its second online video exhibition,

Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster: “Apparitions” (a selection)

Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster (France, 1965) explores the relationship between reality and fiction in the form of environments, projections, photos and films as a means of self-exploration and expression. Her practice is steeped inspiration from literature, film, and opera, as well as cinematic and additional musical sources. Her works are an opportunity to wander through spaces and temporalities, encountering haunting visions of the past, present and future.

Apparitions is an ongoing series of fictional and non-fictional characters realized after extensive research and study and with the help of hair and makeup expert Melanie Gerbeaux.

The first four videos presented in this online exhibition are part of M.2062 – a fragmented opera which has toured from museum to theater since 2012. Included are Lola Montez performed by Martine Carol in Max Ophül’s Lola Montès (1955), Vicky Anderson played by Faye Dunaway in The Thomas Crown Affair (1968), Vera Nabokov meeting Bob Dylan and also La Casati, which became the central character in a music video for Arto Lindsay, a fantastic musician and artist and longtime friend.

The next two videos (5 & 6) are from Exotourisme – a musical project with Perez, a French singer and musician. Singing retro-futuristic melodies, inspired both by the film Blade Runner and by the French “Cold wave” of the 80s, appears as a replicant* for each concert.

The last video (7), Cerveau, continues Gonzalez-Foerster’s collaboration with Perez and introduces a mysterious multiple personality character.

*In the film Blade Runner, a replicant is a fictional bioengineered and virtually identical to humans but have superior strength and speed.
